Watches (In effect)

Waterspout watch in effect

West Coast Vancouver Island South

Issued 07:08 AM PDT 16 May 2026 Conditions are favourable for the development of waterspouts.

Where: Strait of Georgia, Howe Sound, West Coast Vancouver Island South

When: This morning

Additional Information:
An upper trough is over the south coast of B.C. this morning, bringing a cool and unstable airmass. This airmass gives conditions favourable for waterspouts to develop.

Mariners are urged to take all necessary precautions and prepare for the possibility of waterspout activity. Postpone voyage or seek safe harbour if possible. Keep in mind that waterspouts cannot be seen at night and may strike suddenly. Waterspouts sometimes appear as funnel clouds with swirling water visible near the surface.

Waterspouts are generated by weak rotation under rapidly growing clouds or weak thunderstorms. Under favourable conditions, this weak rotation could intensify and become a tornado.

Please continue to monitor alerts and forecasts issued by Environment Canada. For more information monitor Canadian Coast Guard radio or Weatheradio stations.
