Watches (In effect)

Waterspout watch in effect

Strait of Georgia

Issued 3:44 PM PDT 18 May 2021 Conditions are favourable for the development of waterspouts.

There is a slight risk of waterspout development over the Strait of Georgia tonight and early Wednesday morning, especially in southern sections.

Factors combining an unstable cool airmass and warm water temperatures in the Strait of Georgia as an upper low passes through the region tonight favour waterspout development.

Wind speeds inside the spray ring of a waterspout are 45 knots or higher. Vulnerable vessels are at risk of damage or capsizing. Keep in mind that waterspouts cannot be seen at night and may strike suddenly.

Please continue to monitor alerts and forecasts issued by Environment Canada. For more information monitor Canadian Coast Guard radio or Weatheradio stations.
