EXTREME COLD WARNING
- City of Saskatoon
Extreme wind chill values of minus 40 and colder continue. A cold, arctic air mass has settled in over parts of southern Saskatchewan and southern Manitoba. Under this cold air mass, overnight lows will drop to minus 30 and colder. These cold temperatures combined with northerly winds of 10 to 15 km/h will produce extreme wind chill values of minus 40 and colder. Temperatures will begin to moderate in Saskatchewan on Thursday, and the extreme cold will end. But, expect the extreme cold to linger in Manitoba Thursday night into Friday morning. Extreme cold puts everyone at risk. Watch for cold related symptoms: shortness of breath, chest pain, muscle pain and weakness, numbness and colour change in fingers and toes. Dress warmly. Dress in layers that you can remove if you get too warm. The outer layer should be wind resistant. Keep dry to stay warmer. Cover up. Frostbite can develop within minutes on exposed skin, especially with wind chill. Keep emergency supplies in your vehicle such as extra blankets and jumper cables. If it’s too cold for you to stay outside, it’s too cold for your pet to stay outside. Keep moving to maintain your body heat and seek shelter from the wind. Outdoor workers should take regularly scheduled breaks to warm up. Please continue to monitor alerts and forecasts issued by Environment Canada. To report severe weather, send an email to SKstorm@ec.gc.ca or tweet reports using #SKStorm.
