COASTAL FLOODING WARNING
- Vancouver Island Coastline from Nootka Sound to Barkley Sound incl. Tofino
This warning is in effect for parts of the coast due to the following hazard(s): High storm surge. Large waves. Higher than normal water levels. Elevated ocean water levels accompanied by significant wind and waves are expected, likely exceeding highest astronomical tide. What: - Coastal flooding due to large waves coinciding with high tide - Storm surge may rise up to 100 cm above highest astronomical tide When: Near high tide (midday) on Saturday Where: West Vancouver Island from East Sooke to Cape Scott Additional information: A deep low pressure system is poised to make landfall over northern Vancouver Island on Saturday. As it does, very strong southeast winds will veer to very strong southwest and push significant wave heights of 5 to 7 metres onshore onto the west coast of Vancouver Island. The timing of the very strong southwest winds will coincide with high tide, resulting in the potential for storm surge to reach 50 to 80 cm above high tide. Locally, the storm surge may reach 100 cm. Coastal flooding is likely along exposed shorelines, especially in low-lying areas. coastsmart.ca is where you can find coastal safety information that you need to make smart decisions when going near the ocean. The combination of surge and waves may cause damage along the coast. Flooding is likely near the coastline and in nearby low-lying areas. Buildings along low-lying coastal areas are at risk of being flooded or damaged. Stay away from affected coastlines. Surge and waves can have impacts well inland.
WIND WARNING
- West Vancouver Island
Strong winds that may cause damage are expected or occurring. What: Southeast 80 km/h gusting to 100 suddenly veering to southwest 70 km/h gusting to 90. When: Tonight to Saturday afternoon. Where: West Vancouver Island, particularly exposed coastal sections. Hazards: - Additional hazard of storm surge and coastal flooding. Additional information: A deep low pressure system will approach Vancouver Island today. Ahead of the low, southeast winds will rise this evening and peak at 80 km/h gusting 100 overnight. As the low pressure system moves inland, winds will veer to south to southwest 70 km/h gusting to 90 over exposed coastal sections. Winds will ease Saturday night. In addition to the strong winds, there is a threat of coastal flooding due to high tides coinciding with storm surge from this low pressure system near midday on Saturday. Loose objects may be tossed by the wind and cause injury or damage. High winds may result in power outages and fallen tree branches.
