Special Weather Statement in effect for:
  • Bonavista Peninsula

Rain at times heavy and strong winds are expected. Locations: east and northeast Newfoundland, from Bay of Exploits to Clarenville, as well as Buchans and the Interior. Total rainfall: 40 to 70 mm. Maximum wind gusts: north to northeasterly 70 to 80 km/h, with locally higher gusts possible. Time span: Thursday night to Saturday morning. Similar events in the past have led to: - hazardous driving conditions from water pooling on roadways - localized flooding, especially in poor drainage areas - delays and cancellations of ferry services Remarks: A low pressure system is expected to tap into tropical moisture as it intensifies and tracks near eastern Newfoundland later this week. There remains some uncertainty regarding its eventual track, which will affect expected rainfall totals. Rainfall warnings may be required for some areas as the event gets closer and details become more certain. Please continue to monitor alerts and forecasts issued by Environment Canada.
