Special Weather Statement in effect for:
  • Avalon Peninsula North

Rain at times heavy and strong winds are expected. Locations: Avalon, Burin, and Connaigre Peninsulas. Total rainfall: 70 to 100 mm, with locally higher amounts possible. Maximum wind gusts: 70 to 80 km/h, with locally higher gusts possible. Time span: Thursday night to Saturday morning. Similar events in the past have led to: - hazardous driving conditions from water pooling on roadways - road shoulder erosion and washouts - elevated water levels in creeks and streams - delays and cancellations of ferry services Remarks: A low pressure system is expected to tap into tropical moisture as it intensifies and tracks near or across eastern Newfoundland later this week. There remains some uncertainty regarding its eventual track, which will affect expected rainfall totals. Rainfall warnings are likely to be issued early Thursday morning for some areas.
