Conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms that may be capable of producing strong wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain. Potential rainfall rates: locally 40 mm per hour in thunderstorms. Potential wind gusts: near 90 km/h in thunderstorms. Potential hail: 1 to 2 cm. Time span: this afternoon until late this evening. Remarks: Thunderstorms, with potential to become severe, are expected to develop ahead of an approaching cold front. There is also a slight risk of a tornado. Watches may need to be expanded further east as the situation develops. Be sure to watch for changing skies as storms can intensify quickly. When thunder roars, go indoors! Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year. Heavy rain can cause flash flooding and significant reductions to visibility. Severe thunderstorm watches are issued when conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms capable of producing damaging hail, wind or rain.
