EXTREME COLD WARNING

A prolonged extreme cold event continues over southern Manitoba, with most of the region experiencing extreme wind chill values of minus 40 or lower at times this weekend. While wind chill values may moderate slightly during the day, they are anticipated to return to extreme levels during the overnight period. Extreme cold warnings may be expanded to cover most of the south later this weekend. Extreme cold puts everyone at risk. Risks are greater for young children, older adults, people with chronic illnesses, people working or exercising outdoors, and those without proper shelter. Dress warmly. Dress in layers that you can remove if you get too warm. The outer layer should be wind resistant. Cover up. Frostbite can develop within minutes on exposed skin, especially with wind chill. If it’s too cold for you to stay outside, it’s too cold for your pet to stay outside. Extreme cold warnings are issued when very cold temperatures or wind chill creates an elevated risk to health such as frost bite and hypothermia. For more information on cold and your health, visit Manitoba Health at gov.mb.ca/health/publichealth/environmentalhealth/cold.html or call Health Links - Info Santé at 204-788-8200 or toll-free at 1-888-315-9257.
