A heat event is expected to continue into Saturday. Maximum daytime temperatures of near 30 degrees Celsius are expected, with humidex values approaching 37. Overnight minimum temperatures will be 17 to 19 degrees Celsius. At this time, a cooler and less humid airmass is expected to arrive Saturday night. Extreme heat can affect everyone’s health. The health risks are greater for older adults, infants and young children, pregnant people, people with physical and/or mental illnesses, and people with disabilities or mobility issues. Conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms that may be capable of producing large hail and heavy rain. Hazards: Hail up to loonie size Torrential downpours capable of producing up to 50 mm within a few hours Timing: Tonight Discussion: Thunderstorms associated with a cold front will move through the area from northwestern Minnesota tonight. This severe thunderstorm watch replaces a tornado watch that was previously in effect. Large hail can damage property and cause injury. Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads. Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year. Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors! Emergency Management Ontario recommends that you take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches. Severe thunderstorm watches are issued when atmospheric conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms that could produce one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, torrential rainfall.
