Marine Weather StatementIssued 9:58 AM NDT 29 August 2016 A low pressure system west of Anticosti Island will deepen as it
tracks eastward to lie over the Gulf of St. Lawrence by this evening,
then moves across Newfoundland tonight. Strong southwesterly to
northeasterly winds ahead of the low will shift to gale to storm
force northwesterlies in its wake.
Marine interests are advised that a storm warning is in effect for
the Northeast Coast. Gale warnings are in effect for all remaining
waters except Belle Isle Bank - northern half.
At 10:00 AM NDT, hurricane Gaston is located near 30.9 degrees north
and 55.2 degrees west. Maximum sustained winds are 100 knots. Minimum
central pressure is about 960 MB. It is currently moving northward at
Gaston is forecast to pass well south of Canadian forecast waters.
At 10:00 AM NDT, tropical depression eight is located near 32.8
degrees north and 73.4 degrees west. Maximum sustained winds are 30
knots. Minimum central pressure is about 1010 MB. It is currently
moving northwestward at 9 knots.
The depression is expected to become a tropical storm this evening.
At this time, it is too soon to determine what, if any, impacts it
will have on Canadian waters.
