Eastern Lake ErieIssued 05:17 AM EDT 27 September 2016 Conditions are favourable for the development of waterspouts.
A few waterspouts are likely extending in roughly a line over northeastern portions of Lake Erie this morning.
Wind speeds inside the spray ring of a waterspout are 45 knots or higher. Vulnerable vessels are at risk of damage or capsizing. Mariners are urged to take all necessary precautions and prepare for the possibility of waterspout activity. Postpone voyage or seek safe harbour if possible. Keep in mind that waterspouts cannot be seen at night and may strike suddenly. Waterspouts are generally isolated in nature although they can also occur in families of two or more. Waterspouts are generally short-lived in nature, typically lasting 20 minutes or less. Spray rings associated with waterspouts can measure in the tens of metres.
