A prolonged period of very cold wind chills is expected. What: Wind chills of minus 30 to minus 35. When: Tonight into Saturday morning. Wind chills of minus 30 to minus 35 may return Saturday night into Sunday morning for some locations. Extreme cold puts everyone at risk. Risks are greater for young children, older adults, people with chronic illnesses, people working or exercising outdoors, and those without proper shelter. Watch for cold related symptoms: shortness of breath, chest pain, muscle pain and weakness, numbness and colour change in fingers and toes. Cover up. Frostbite can develop within minutes on exposed skin, especially with wind chill. Check on older family, friends and neighbours. Keep emergency supplies in your vehicle such as extra blankets and jumper cables. If it’s too cold for you to stay outside, it’s too cold for your pet to stay outside. Watch for colour changes on fingers and toes, pain, numbness, a tingling sensation, or swelling. If present, move indoors and begin warming. Poor visibility in snow and blowing snow is expected beginning this afternoon or early this evening. What: Significantly reduced visibility in blowing snow. Strong wind gusts of 70 to 80 km/h possible. When: Beginning this afternoon or early this evening, continuing tonight and possibly into Saturday morning. Additional Information: Strong northwesterly winds will develop this afternoon which will lead to blowing snow and significantly reduced visibility. Visibility may even be near zero at times for wind-prone and exposed areas. Keep emergency supplies in your vehicle such as extra blankets and jumper cables. Travel will likely be hazardous due to near-zero visibility. Road closures are possible. Consider postponing non-essential travel until conditions improve. If you become lost or stranded, remain where you are until conditions improve. Protect yourself from wind, cold and disorientation by staying sheltered, indoors or with your vehicle.
