YELLOW WARNING - WINTER STORM

Impact Level: Moderate

Forecast Confidence: High

Snow, blowing snow, and strong winds are expected. Locations: southwestern Newfoundland. Total snowfall: 20 to 30 cm, except near 15 cm along the coast from Burgeo to Francois. Higher amounts are likely inland and over higher terrain. Maximum wind gusts: northeasterly 60 to 70 km/h, shifting to northwesterly 80 to 100 km/h. Time span: overnight tonight until Tuesday morning. Similar storms in the past have caused: - school closures and cancellations of community activities - disruptions to public services - delays or cancellations of ferry services Remarks: Snow will begin early this evening and intensify overnight into Monday morning. Winds will also increase from the northeast Monday morning, causing poor visibility in blowing snow. Areas along the south coast from Burgeo to Francois could see the snow mix with rain or ice pellets at times on Monday as temperatures hover near the freezing mark; however, precipitation will remain as snow inland over the Burgeo Highway. Late Monday afternoon or early evening, winds will shift to strong northwesterlies that will gradually diminish throughout Monday night as the snow slowly tapers to flurries. Visibility will likely be suddenly reduced to near zero at times. Prepare for some disruptions to transportation, services, and utilities. Winter Storm Warnings are issued when multiple types of severe winter weather (such as snow, freezing rain, wind and rain) are expected or occurring. Please continue to monitor alerts and forecasts issued by Environment Canada. To report severe weather, send an email to NLstorm@ec.gc.ca or post reports on X using #NLwx.
