Blizzard warning in effect for:
Winds are increasing today over much of the Kivalliq with northerly winds of 50 to 60 km/h gusting to 70 or 80 km/h today into tonight. These strong winds will produce blizzard conditions with near zero visibilities through tonight.
For much of the Kivalliq conditions are not expected to improve until Friday when winds speeds decrease. Coral Harbour will see an improvement Thursday afternoon.
In addition, the very strong winds will combine with temperatures in the mid minus thirties to produce dangerous wind chills of minus 55 or colder today.
Travel is expected to be extremely hazardous due to reduced visibility. Consider postponing non-essential travel until conditions improve. If you must travel, keep others informed of your schedule and destination and carry an emergency kit and mobile phone. If you do travel and become lost, remain where you are until the blizzard has passed. Protect yourself from wind, cold and disorientation by staying sheltered, indoors or with your vehicle.
Blizzard warnings are issued when widespread reduced visibilities of 400 metres or less are expected for at least 6 hours.
