Special weather statement in effect for:
Stormy period Friday through the weekend over Baffin region. Significant snowfall with wind and blowing snow expected.
A low pressure system is forecast to develop over Hudson Bay Friday as milder air from the south collides with cold air descending from the high Arctic. This low will spread snow across much of southern Baffin Island Friday through Friday night with 10 to 15 cm possible in some areas, including Kimmirut and Iqaluit. Gusty southeast winds to 50 to 60 km/h will accompany the system giving reduced visibilities in blowing snow. Snow is expected to taper off over southern regions Saturday although snow will continue much of the weekend along the eastern Baffin coastline as the system tracks into central Baffin Island. Increasing northerly winds, falling temperatures and snow can be expected over the Melville Peninsula area and western portions of the Baffin region Friday night into Saturday on the backside of this storm system.
A second more powerful low pressure system is expected to form over Southampton Island Sunday and may impact southern Baffin Island Sunday night into Monday with another round of snow, strong winds and blowing snow.
Uncertainty remains as to the exact track and intensity of these upcoming storm systems as well as more precise impacts on local communities. ECCC meteorologists continue to monitor the situation and additional updates, watches, and warnings will be issued as needed over the coming days.
