Special weather statement in effect for:
Significant snow, wind, and blowing snow for much of the Baffin Region this weekend.
An intense low pressure system is forecast to develop in the Foxe Basin area Friday as milder air from the south collides with cold air descending from the high arctic. Ongoing snow over the Baffin Region will intensify throughout Friday accompanied by increasing winds gusting to 70 km/h or more by late in the day. Poor visibilities in snow and blowing snow are expected by Friday night continuing into the weekend, with general snowfall amounts in the 10 to 20 cm range and the potential for sustained blizzard conditions. In the south, the winds and snow will begin to diminish later on Saturday, but further north the poor conditions will persist for most of Sunday as well before improvement is expected. Uncertainty remains as to the exact track and intensity of this system as well as more precise impacts on local communities. ECCC meteorologists continue to monitor the situation and additional updates, watches, and warnings will be issued as needed over the coming days.
Please continue to monitor alerts and forecasts issued by Environment Canada. To report severe weather, send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org or tweet reports to #NUStorm.
