Alerts for: Gander and vicinity

5:42 AM NDT Thursday 17 April 2014
Special weather statement in effect for:

  • Gander and vicinity

Significant spring snowfall expected Saturday.

A low pressure system will bring a spring snowfall to most of the island on Saturday. Over Southeastern Newfoundland, snow may mix with ice pellets or change to rain Saturday afternoon before changing back to snow Saturday night.

There remains some uncertainty in the track and intensity of the low, as a result it is too soon to determine exactly where the highest snowfall accumulations will occur. Current indications show that between 15 to 30 centimeters of snow may fall over parts of Eastern Newfoundland.

Additionally, strong northerly winds will develop over eastern parts of the island Saturday night and persist into Sunday morning. These strong winds may combine with the fresh snow to reduce visibilities in blowing snow, particularly over exposed areas.

The public is advised to monitor future forecasts and warnings as warnings may be required or extended.
