over northeastern Newfoundland.
By 3:30 p.m. NDT Friday low 999 mb located over southwestern Funk

Marine Weather Statement

Issued 3:21 PM NDT 17 August 2017 A low pressure system will strengthen off the Northeast Coast of
Newfoundland tonight then slowly pull away to the east on Friday.
Strong to gale force winds can be expected around this low overnight
and Friday.

At 3:30 P.M. NDT hurricane Gert is forecast to be near latitude 44.6
north and longitude 46.7 west , about 295 nautical miles
east-southeast of Cape Race. Gert is moving east-northeastward at
about 31 knots with a central pressure of 978 MB and maximum
sustained winds of near 70 knots.

Gert is forecast to continue to track away from the marine district
tonight with strong to gale force northwesterlies in its wake.
Gert also has the potential to bring high swells to southeastern
coastal Newfoundland.

Hurricane Gert may also cause a series of rapid changes in water
levels in harbours and inlets around the Avalon Peninsula, especially
from the southeastern tip of the Avalon Peninsula North to Trinity
bay. This is most likely to occur for a couple of hours later this
afternoon into this evening. As high tide will be occurring late this
afternoon for most areas, there is a risk for minor coastal flooding
during this time.

Marine interests are advised that gale warnings are in effect for the
South Coast, East Coast, Northeast Coast, Funk Island Bank - northern
half, and the Southern Grand Banks.
